Lovingly Remembered
Sharon Adams – Obituary
Beloved member of Emmaus Community Courtenay BC. Passed away 2017.
Sharon was one of our founding members when we joined CLC in 1988. Sharon shared Emmanuel Property with Lock and Joanne Mawhinney for 17 years.
A single mother of two, Sharon had a long nursing career as an obstetrics nurse. She attended two national CLC assemblies. Sharon had a great sense of humor which stayed with her despite a cancer diagnosis of a few months that continued ten years. Faithful to prayer and the word, she was a much loved companion on the Emmaus journey. Sharon was an avid reader and always very interested in medical issues. Sharon always had a cheerful demeanour in-spite of her illness. May she rest in peace.
Howard R. Engel’s table graces shared at the 2019 CLC Canada National Assembly in Winnipeg
The table graces before eating actually consists of 5 table graces I gradually strung together throughout my 27-year marriage to Esther G. Juce, thus:
(table grace I learned from my parents, especially his father, growing up in the Lutheran church; we’ve heard it from others in mainline churches so we suspect it has a more general source)
Come, Lord Jesus, and be our Guest,
And let these gifts to us be blessed.
(from Canadian Lutheran World Relief – CLWR, the Lutheran equivalent of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace)
Feed us with your Living Bread
That all creation may be fed.
(from CLWR, again):
For food in a world where many walk in hunger;
For faith in a world where many walk in fear;
For fellowship in a world where many walk alone;
We give you thanks, O Lord.
(Canadian Methodist clergyman, social Gospel reformer and founder of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (C.C.F.), the forerunner of the New Democratic Party (N.D.P.), J.S. Wordsworth (1874-1942), is the source of “Grace before meat” (modified by us) per his daughter Grace MacInnis’ 1953 biography of him, J.S. Wordsworth: a Man to Remember):
We give you thanks for these and all the good things in life.
We recognize they come to us through our sisters and brothers the world over.
What we desire for ourselves we wish for all.
To this end may we participate in the world’s work and in the world’s salvation.
(The Orthodox Christian Church):
Christ, Our God,
Bless these gifts of us, your servants,
The hands that prepared them,
And those that partake of them,
For You are Holy
Now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Here is the Orthodox Christian table grace that we stand and sing after eating:
We give thanks to You , O Christ our God, that You have satisfied us with Your earthly blessings; deprive us not also of Your Heavenly Kingdom, but as You came among Your disciples and did grant them peace, so come unto us and save us, O Saviour.
